How Can You Improve your Return-On-Investment For Your Training Dollars?
Martin Business Consulting, Inc. (MBC, Inc.) is interested in helping each organization we support in getting the greatest benefit possible from the training we provide.
With your permission, we can offer several steps to assist you in ensuring effective implementation of the training on which you have spent your company’s money.
This support service provided by MBC, Inc. is voluntary on your part and the offer is without additional cost to your organization. Actually, this is just a series of steps you can take to give your employees the best opportunity to enjoy success in the application of the new training.
MBC, Inc. Has a Three Step Approach to Successful Implementation
1) What should happen prior to attending the training?
2) What should happen during the training?
3) What should happen after attending the training?
Prior to Attending the Training;
Take steps to ensure you are enrolling in the training that will provide you the skills needed to accomplish the required task, and bring the improvement you desire. To accomplish this it may be in the best interest of a manager, such as the Human Resources Manager, the Quality Manager or the Operations Manager, to talk with a representative of MBC, Inc. Discuss the task, role, training content and application methods and resources or support that will be needed to become successful in an efficient manner.
Early examination should also include; does the organization currently have resources and methods to support the implementation of the training, resources such as; procedures, hardware/software, other expertise in the field, does the leadership team understand the training and understand the benefit of the implementation of the training?
Lastly, the attendee should have a discussion with their direct leader and other interested Managers as to what they should get from the seminar. Is the attendee to be the organization’s subject-matter-expert, or a project leader, or are they to support some activity or task and only need overview understanding of the topic.
During the Training;
The attendee should fully engage in the training process. Asking questions and initiating discussion as well as making appropriate challenges of the consultant. A student challenging a statement or point is not upsetting to a consultant worthy of the title; these challenges always initiate discussion that helps everyone understand the material at a much higher level. Civil challenge well phrased and well presented enhances the training experience for everyone.
After Attending the Training:
Upon return to your business facility, the training attendees should write a brief description of the training they received and a three or four step implementation plan.
1) At minimum the implementation plan should contain:
2) If the training is Quality related the Quality Manager/Director should be involved in any implementation plans and any need to add or revise current procedures or policies.
3) If the training is Environmentally related the Environmental Manager or Engineer should be fully involved in the implementation plans including any revisions to current procedures and policies.
4) Operations Leaders or Managers should be involved in the changes that may affect their specific sphere of responsibility.
5) If the training is leadership development, the top leadership team must be involved in the follow-up implementation activities. In most businesses, manufacturing or service, the top leadership team is comprised of the highest-level leader and all the “direct-reports” to this leader.
- What resources or equipment is needed to implement or support the training?
- What are the hardware and software needs?
- What support are the various departments and other subject matter experts within your facility able to provide?
- What procedural changes or additions will implementation require?
To assist you in effective and efficient implementation of the training your people have just received please download the free check-sheet. This check-sheet is a simple three-phase, leadership led, approach to the implementation of your recent training.
After all, the return-on-investment only occurs with your effective implementation of the training purchased.
